The Illinois tax deadline is approaching. Here’s what you need to know

The tax deadline is approaching, and the Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding taxpayers that there are only a few days left to file. April 15 is the deadline to file your 2024 state individual income tax return.

The agency began accepting returns on Jan. 27, the same day the IRS began accepting federal tax refunds. “We encourage taxpayers to file their taxes electronically and choose direct deposit to ensure that any refund is processed and issued as quickly as possible,” said IDOR Director David Harris. Illinois will participate in the free IRS Direct File program this year, which eligible Illinois taxpayers can use to file their 2024 federal tax refunds directly with the IRS.

The federal tax return information can then be transferred to MyTax Illinois to file Illinois individual income taxes for free. “IRS Direct File provides free federal tax returns, step-by-step instructions and live online support,” Harris said. “Eligible taxpayers can use the verified Direct File information from their federal tax return to file their state taxes for free in My Tax Illinois, which not only saves time but also reduces the potential for errors.”
